Examination

• Applicants who meet the listed requirements will be admitted to the examination. The examination must be completed within a period of two years. Applicants must successfully pass the comprehensive written examination based on the principles and practice of forensic toxicology.
• If unsuccessful at the first examination, the candidate may retake the examination a second time within their two-year period of candidacy, no sooner than 90 days following the first examination. An additional fee shall apply.
• An applicant may reapply for certification one time no earlier than 180 days after failing to pass the second examination and shall provide proof of remediation with the application for it to be accepted for review. The acceptance of a second application for certification rests solely with the board of directors whose decision in this process is final.
• Under the second application, a candidate is allowed one examination attempt, unless there was only one attempt under the first application, for a total maximum of three examination attempts.

Scheduling

• Due to the increased interest to become certified in forensic toxicology, the ABFT will be offering the analyst, diplomate, and fellow examinations at multiple venues.
  • AAFS 2024 - Denver, CO - February 20, 2024 - 8:30 a.m.
  • MATT 2024 - Rosemont, IL - April 3, 2024 - 12:00 p.m.
  • IACT 2024 - La Jolla, CA - April 21, 2024 - 9:00 a.m.
  • CAT 2024 - Walnut Creek, CA - May 5, 2024 - 1:30 p.m.
  • ABFT Administrative Office in Colorado Springs, CO upon request.
  • Members of the board may proctor exams at their location once arrangements have been made through the ABFT Administrative Office.
• All candidates who wish to sit for the examination must register with Sherri Williamson, administration and operations director, a minimum of 30 days prior to the examination date. All arrangements to sit for an exam must go through the ABFT Administrative Office only. To successfully complete the certification process as an analyst, fellow, or diplomate, candidates must pass an examination within two years of obtaining candidate status.
• Candidates who have a disability and would like to request an accommodation for the exam, must submit the request along with medical documentation prior to scheduling the exam.
